Aging in Place & NORCs
A New Way to Think About Growing Older
Aging in Place
More Canadians than ever want to remain in their homes and communities as they get older.
Aging in Place is all about having the right supports to do that—healthcare, social connections, safe housing, and community services that help people live independently for as long as possible.
Thinking About The Future: Plan Now to Age in Place? (Gov’t of Canada Workbook)
What’s a NORC?
A Naturally Occurring Retirement Community (NORC) isn’t built—it simply happens. It’s a neighbourhood or apartment building where many older adults already live.
When people age together in community, there’s an opportunity for increased support, connection, and quality of life.
The NORC Ambassadors Program is one example of how this model is being supported in Canada.
😟 The Truth About Aging in Canada
Our seniors deserve better.
Growing older should come with peace, dignity, and support. But for many Canadians, that’s not the reality. Navigating aging—whether for yourself or a loved one—can feel confusing, overwhelming, and incredibly lonely.

Families are struggling with questions like:
- “How do I find reliable services to help mom stay at home?”
- “Can someone help me make sense of Power of Attorney and Wills?”
- “Dad says he’s fine—but I can see he’s starting to forget things.”
- “We need help, but we don’t even know what kind of help exists.”
- “None of my siblings are stepping up—and I’m burnt out.”
There are gaps in support, misinformation, and a maze of decisions to make about housing, healthcare, finances, safety, and legal matters. The system isn’t easy to navigate—especially if you’re doing it alone.
